It is not selfish to love yourself, or to spend time doing what makes you happy. We are so busy trying to make others happy in this modern day, putting pressure on ourselves with work, trying to always be there for friends and loved ones, getting everything done at once, saying yes to every invitation, does that sound like you or someone you know?
Well it doesn’t always have to be this way, we need to pause for a second and learn to be in the present moment, or our fire will burn out.
Lets ask ourselves, how can we possibly give our everything in life if we cannot give love to ourselves?
We cannot pour from an empty cup, we need time and space to stop and be in the present moment, away from all the chaos, just to be us, and to breathe.
My self-care routine
I have to admit I haven’t always cared about myself as much as I should, or given myself the time to carry out self-care the way I do now.
Since I was eighteen I was a carer for four years, and I also worked in a busy office management role after that, both jobs were highly stressful physically and mentally.
When my health took a turn for the worst, and I got told my diagnosis for Ulcerative Colitis at the age of 21, it forced me to take a step back and embrace a slower life.
I decided to leave the days of working long hours and the 9 to 5 job behind, it was all too much for my body to cope with, and living with an autoimmune disease now means I have to listen to my body when its tired, something that did not come easy to me at first.
I now meditate daily to help with stress, I feed myself nutritious and unprocessed foods which will help my gut, I read and write, I also love to go for a run if I am feeling well, all methods of self-care that I have had to implement into my life, and with a lot of self-discipline.
What I have realised since living with Colitis is that we don’t realise how important our health is until something bad happens, or it is taken away.
By working ourselves to the bone to meet deadlines, to keep saying yes to everything and everyone, just to be liked or to impress. None of that is important when it comes to our self-care and self-love, because as the saying goes…
Health is Wealth, and you come first!
